Interior Home Painting Haddonfield, NJ: Pro Surface Preparation Tips

When it comes to ensuring the success of your painting project, there is no step more important than preparing the walls, which includes cleaning, sanding, and applying primer before applying the paint.

Even if all surfaces do not require the same preparation in several stages, we encourage you to examine your surfaces carefully before painting them and to take the necessary measures where needed.

In this article, we will be sharing tips and steps required during surface preparation before painting;

Cleaning

The cleanliness of the walls is the key to preparing a room before painting it.

There is no one right way to do this, most walls can be washed with a sponge and lukewarm water.

However, it is recommended to wash surfaces in contact with oil or dirt, such as kitchen walls, with a solution of degreaser detergent diluted with water, then rinse with clean water to remove cleaning product residue.

Then you can wipe the walls with a damp cloth.

The most important part of the cleaning process is to allow all surfaces to dry thoroughly.

If you apply a coat of primer or paint to walls that are still damp, a host of problems can arise, including blistering.

Mold Remediation

Whatever room you are about to paint, make sure it is free from mold.

Never paint a surface with mold – it will proliferate through the new coat of paint and make the subsequent cleaning and maintenance steps even more difficult.

You can remove mold with a solution of three to four parts of water in one part of bleach.

Apply the solution with a sponge and let it sit for a few minutes, scrub the surface with a soft brush, then rinse it with clean water.

Do not forget to put on gloves and protective glasses and allow enough time for drying.

Sanding

Although sanding is not a must for every painting project, rough spots on walls, whether painted or not, should be sanded before coating to ensure even application.

Use sandpaper or a sanding block to remove the stains and bumps from uneven surfaces.

Remove the sanding dust with a damp cloth, then allow to dry completely.

It is essential to even out already painted walls before covering them with a coat of glossy or very glossy paint.

If it is a water-based paint, you should use fine-grained sandpaper; for oil-based paint, choose medium grain sandpaper (100-150).

Again, remove any residue, then allow it to dry completely.

Another problem that can arise is the cracking or peeling off old layers of paint.

Avoid painting a cracked surface, first remove the scales by sanding or scraping, and then apply the paint.

Apply the Primer

If paint and color are used to create the decor of a house, primer is used to provide the foundations.

Use a primer to get the most out of your paint, especially if your walls are porous or if you have stains to cover.

A primer conceals imperfections and creates a smooth surface that promotes adhesion of the paint and ensures a uniform finish.
