Exterior Wood Painting Evesham, NJ: Choosing the Type of Varnish

Subjected to severe stress, exterior woodwork, and joinery (shutters, doors, gates, windows, beams, etc.) must be durably protected from climatic conditions (UV, bad weather) and extreme exposures.

The colors and aspects of the exterior varnish enhance the wood, guarantee excellent protection, and preserve the natural beauty of the wood.

In this article, we want to share some insights on how to choose a varnish for your project.

Which Exterior Varnish Should You Choose?

Beyond its primary function: protection against climatic conditions, the varnish also has an aesthetic and decorative function.

Matt, satin or shiny … colorless, light, or dark shades … so many possibilities to decorate and enhance the appearance of your exterior woodwork.

Typically, varnishes protect and embellish all your exterior woodwork and furniture by providing a perfect finish to softwoods, hardwoods, and exotic woods.

They form a protective, resistant, and impermeable film on the surface of the wood and give it protection over time.

If you want to protect your woods while preserving their grain and their original color, we recommend the 100% transparent exterior varnish.

Its ultra matt aspect reveals the natural charm of your woods without distorting them. It is particularly recommended for light woods

If you want to protect but also decorate your exterior woods, consider tinted wood varnishes.

Based on polyurethane resin, Wood Varnish protects all wood species from climatic aggressions (UV, bad weather) and shocks.

It protects but also has aesthetic qualities.

Matt, shiny or satin … light oak, golden oak or dark oak … aspects and colors offer you a wide choice for your outdoor decoration.

Do you like the charm and authenticity of the good old days? Do you want to warm up the color of your woodwork by adding a beautiful golden hue and intense shine?

Consider varnishes that have alkyd resin formulation and enriched with anti-UV agents to effectively protect your wood from graying.

If you want to protect and decorate your exterior woods subject to the marine atmosphere and extreme climates, Marine Varnish will provide you with maximum protection against thermal shock, UV, snow, and sea salts.

How to Varnish Shutters, Doors, Gates, and Windows?

Preparation Before Applying the Varnish

For perfect adhesion, the varnish should be applied to a clean, dry, and healthy surface.

Oily and exotic woods should be degreased beforehand with acetone.

The blackened or greyed woodwork should be cleaned with a wooden screen and then sanded with 80 grit sandpaper.

The already varnished woodwork will be sanded with 100 grit sandpaper.

The woodwork covered with paints or stains should be stripped beforehand with a stripper.

When the layer of paint or stain is peeled off or softened (leave to act for 10 to 45 minutes depending on the type of surface), remove it with a spatula or scraper.

For the grooves, use a stiff bristle brush. Then remove the residue with a damp sponge. Once dry, sand with fine sandpaper.

If the wood is not in good condition (traces of fungi or wood-boring insect’s holes), treat with a suitable wood treatment product or a non-greasy curative product that will permeate and deeply protect the wood.

Let dry 48 hours before varnishing.

Varnish application

Mix well before use to obtain a homogeneous mixture and avoid the pigments remaining at the bottom of the container.

For a perfect finish, apply two to three medium layers in the direction of the wood grain. Follow the directions for use indicated on your varnish jar.

Sand with 120 to 180 grit sandpaper between the layers after drying to remove the small roughness of the wood and obtain a superb appearance.

Even if the varnish is dry on the surface, it takes several days for the core to dry.

Take some precautions during the first few days, avoiding stress and stains on the varnished surface.
